Robert Goodwin is a retired surgeon who began carving
birds almost 20 years ago. His creations are sculpted from tupelo
wood and painted with acrylic paint. Over the years he has gained a
reputation for the beauty and quality of his work. “With every piece I
create, I strive to combine accuracy and detail with artistic
presentation. This is accomplished by studying the bird in its
natural habitat, in photographs and in literature until I have an
inspired picture in my mind of what I want the piece to look like. Only then do actually begin working with wood.” His inspiration
is easy to come by because he lives in the middle of 700 acres of
beautiful wilderness overlooking the Green River valley in Kentucky.
“It is almost a religious experience for me to look out of the window
of my studio. The natural beauty of this country never fails to inspire
me. I extend an open invitation for anyone interested in bird carving to
come visit me.”
Dr. Goodwin has been the recipient of numerous awards at local, national
and international competitions including the Ward World Championships.
He was one of fifty artists chosen from a national competition to
exhibit works at the Kentucky Wildlife Exhibition. His works have also
been featured at a number of art museums across the country.
"He is a permanent exhibitor at the Salaato, Ky Wildlife Museum in
Frankfort Ky."
